Day 4 Preview

There will be 15 Irish athletes competing tomorrow in 7 sports.

13:00-19:00 Sailing-470 races 3& 4
Ger Owens and Phil Lawton lie in ninth place after the first two races after winning the second race earlier today. Tomorrow they will compete in the next two of the ten race competition and they will be confident of repeating their success and close the gap between themselves and the medal positions. Today's contrasting results show just how open this class is and if Ger and Phil can perform consistently for the next eight races a medal is a realistic goal.

Women’s Laser races 1 and 2
Friday's flag bearer Ciara Peelo begins her competition with the first two races in the Laser class. Peelo will want to get off to a good start and post at least one good result tomorrow to set her up well for the rest of the competition.

15:40 Canoe Slalom – Kayak Single semi-final
Eoin Rheinisch will continue his quest for a medal tomorrow and will have to finish in the top ten in order to make the final which will take place later that day. Eoin will be the first one to take on the newly modified course which is a disadvantage but everyone starts from scratch tomorrow so a good performance will give him a good shot of a place in the final.

16:40 Rowing – Men’s Lightweight Four Repechage
The Irish quartet of Cathal Moynihan, Gearoid Towey, Richard Archibald and Paul Griffin will race Egypt, USA and Netherlands with the top three moving on to the semi-finals. The Irish will be confidant of making the semi-final as they were four seconds faster than the other three crews and they will be using it to fine tune their start, if they can perfect their start they will be in with a good shot of making the final.

19:15 Eventing Day 3 – Show Jumping
Geoff Curran, Niall Griffin, Louise Lyons, Austin O’Connor and Patricia Ryan will enter the final day of competition knowing that a near perfect set of rounds and a number of mistakes from their rivals are needed if the team are to challenge for a medal, they currently lie in eight place. Meanwhile, in the individual competition there is no chance of a medal as the best of the Irish is just way too far behind the top three.

19:36 Swimming – Men’s 200m Breaststroke
Andrew Bree will take part in the second of his three events and the 200 breaststroke is his favored event, he will be confident of progressing to the semi-finals but will have to improve on his personal best if he is to progress further than that.

21:30 Boxing - Bantamweight
John Joe Nevin is tipped for success at these games and he faces Abdelhalim Ourradi from Algeria in his opening bout. Nevin is heavily fancied for victory and should go far in the competition.

What else is on?
There is lots of exciting action to choose from tomorrow. The swimming has been epic so far and is only set to get better as the days go on and as Michael Phelps aims to get closer and closer to his desired 8 gold medals, aside from Phelps though the amount of world and Olympics records being smashed from all angles is amazing and I hope the brilliant performances will continue.

The Men's Gymnastics finals always turn out to be a great show and is enjoyed by even those who don't usually take an interest in Gymnastics usually, much like myself.

Another sport that much be watched is Handball, this sport is fast paced, non-stop and full of action and it is a shame there is not much of a following here in Ireland but I can see why it is such a popular sport around Europe. The Men's competition resumes tomorrow.

The US 'Redeem team' are back in action tomorrow as they face arguably the weakest team in the competition Angola and it is a great chance for their coach Mike Krzyzewski to give all the players significant court time and to perfect their defence tactics which will be needed against the bigger teams such as Spain and Greece.
