Denis Lynch delivered another world class round with the 10-year-old gelding Lantinus in the second Olympic qualifying round at Hong Kong. He went around with no jumping faults and only a single time fault to add to his existing tally, bringing him to a total of just two faults prior to Monday's third qualifying round. Jumping 11th of 76 riders, Lynch was the first rider in today's class to leave all the poles intact on an intimidating track. Ireland's sole competitor in the show jumping jumps again tomorrow attempting to qualify for the final on Thursday, when the top 35 riders left in the competition will be reduced to a top 20 who will fight for medal positions in the last Olympic jumping round.
The Irish track and field women failed to deliver today with four very disappointing results. In the Marathon, Pauline Curley finished 63rd and clocked a time of 2:47:15. Derval O'Rourke failed to qualify from her heat in the 100 metre hurdles after she finished sixth in a time of 13.22. O'Rourke looked very nervous as the athletes lined up and was the culprit of a false start.
She went from lane eight and started well but she drifted after 40 metres and the Cork woman was not among the qualifiers in what was a disappointing showing. Michelle Carey finished last in her heat in the 400 metre hurdles, posting a time of 57.99. It was a disappointing effort by the national champion, considering her best time this year was 56.19. An error in the opening 10 metres proved costly and she never looked in contention from lane three.

In Sailing, Peter O'Leary and Stephen Milne finished 10th in their only race today in the Star class. That result means they have dropped out of the top 10 in the overall standings, they now lie 11th with six races remaining in the Olympic regatta. Overall, O'Leary and Milne are just one point behind the tenth-placed crew, Switzerland's Flavio Marazzi and Enrico De Maria.
Ciara Peelo placed a disappointing 24th in race 6 of the Laser Radial class at the Olympic regatta today and seriously dented any chance of a place in the top 10. Ciara was 14th overnight in the overall standings, but has slipped down to 19th after being outpaced in the sixth race in Qingdao.
