So close for Rheinisch on Day 4

Eoin Rheinisch came agonisingly close to winning a bronze medal in the Kayak slalom final earlier today. Eoin barely qualified for the semi-final and again for the final, this meant that he had to go first but that didn't phase him and he put in a clean round to put himself in contention. Rheinisch remained in the league until there was only four paddlers remaining but unfortunately, three of them went faster and left Eoin in the worst position possible in fourth. However Rheinisch was pleased with his performance and admitted 'I can't complain, I've been riding my luck to get just through each heat to the final but fourth is still a very good achievement.' Germany's Alexander Grimm's superb second run of 84.39 was enough to secure him the gold medal.

Elsewhere, it was not such a good day for the Irish sailing team, two boats were in action today.
Gerald Owens and Phil Lawton are 13th overall after scoring a 17th in race three and 15th in race four in the double handed men's 470 class. Australia's Nathan Wilmot & Malcolm Page lead the competitive fleet of 29 nations and the Irish are not completely out of touch, a few good races will bring them back into the hunt for a medal. There was a disappointing finish for Ciara Peelo finished 23rd and 17th in the first two races of the Laser Radial class at the Olympic sailing regatta today. Ciara will mot be happy with her first day and rapid improvement is needed.

Irish Boxer John JoeNevin was impressive in his first round victory over Abdelhalim Ourradi of Algeria. It was a low scoring affair which never really got going, Nevin won 9-4 and once he got a good lead, he was never going to let it slip. John Joe was quick around the ring, tagging his opponent to take a three point lead and forcing an increasingly desperate Ourradi to come onto him more, allowing the Mullingar man to pick him off with ease and a victory was never in doubt against a man who beat him only two months ago.

The Eventing team finished in eight place overall after the showjumping section earlier today. Germany won the gold medal after finishing the three-day event in first with 166.10 penalty points with Australia (171.20) second and Great Britain third (185.70) Ireland finished with 276.10 penalty points. Austin O'Connor qualified for the individual final and finished 21st with Hinrich Romeike taking gold.
Swimmer Andrew Bree won his heat in the 200m Breaststroke in a national record time of 2:10:91. Bree has qualified for the semi-finals in 12th fastest and will need to repeat his record breaking performance if he is to make the final.
The Irish lightweight four rowing team qualified for Friday's semi-finals after winning their repechage in style. They will go into their semi-final knowing that their start will have to improve if they are to finish in the top three and get into the 'A' final.
