Some success on Day 3

It was a good day all round for the 10 Irish athletes in action today.

In the Eventing Cross Country, Ireland moved up two places to eight in the team competition. They now lie within striking distance of the medal positions on 265.10 points with only the showjumping left tomorrow. Germany lead the table with 158.10 points, followed by Australia on 162.00 and Great Britain on 173.70. In the eventing individual cross country event, the pick of Ireland's individuals is Louise Lyons in 35th place. Austin O'Connor riding Hobby du Mee is one place behind in 36th position. Geoffrey Curran lies in 39th, while Niall Griffin and Lorgaine are in 41st position. Patricia Ryan completes the Irish team in 47th place moving up significantly from 69th and last.

In Sailing, Tim Goodbody recorded finishes of 16th and 17th in races 5 and 6 but fell three places to 21st in the Finn class overall standings. There was much better news for the Irish 470 pair who began their campaign today. Despite finishing a disappointing 22nd in the opening race, they bounced back to win the second race. The team of Ger Owens and Phil Lawton lie 9th overall after day one.

There was disaster for swimmer Melanie Nocher as she failed to progress from her 200m freestyle heat in Beijing, finishing in a disappointing 7th place after a mishap with her goggles. Nocher got off to a decent start in the race but paused to readjust her goggles just 30 seconds into the race, losing ground on the leaders and eventually finished 7th. This event was only a preparation event for Melanie for her favoured 200 Backstroke but nevertheless she will be very disappointed with this race.

Eoin Rheinisch has qualified for the semi-finals of the canoeing event, but his place in the semi-final is now pending an appeal from American Scott Parsons. Rheinisch needed on of the remaining ten paddlers to post a slower time than him which would give Eoin a place in tomorrow's semi-final and one of the leading competitors, Parsons, did Eoin a huge favour only minutes later. Parsons was on course to qualify in the top three but just near the end he missed a gate by the narrowest of margins and incurred a 50-second penalty. This put him out of the top 16 and Rheinisch's place in the semi-final was secured. However, the US has appealed the penalty imposed on Parsons in the second run and while their initial appeal was rejected they have launched a second one. Should the new appeal be successful, it will put Parsons into the top 15 and will push Rheinisch out. The Irish could then launch a counter appeal and this could go on until tomorrow but hopefully the first decision will stand and we will be seeing Rheinisch in action tomorrow.
